Nicole Barton, Artist

My father put a paint brush in my hand at the age of two and I never put it down.  My earliest memories are of painting, drawing and basically just seeing the world in a different and colorful way.  I was born in Columbus, Ohio and lived there until the age of 7.  Though I have lived in many places, Birmingham is my home.  I love to travel and explore new areas and it is not unusual to see me packing my bags for a new adventure.   It was here in Alabama that my Dad started to teach me the fundamental skills that I would need to paint.  From early education through high school I was in an art class several hours a day.  After graduation until now, I have been a commissioned artist and teacher.  I would have to say that my inspirations come from my sisters and my family as a whole.  I have a large beautiful family who has supported my artistic bent throughout my life.

Early on, I developed an affinity with faces and the human body.  What a miracle it is that God can create every face and body differently!  We are all a unique work of art. The pencil fits perfectly in my hand.  I love pencil and have made an awesome living working on commissioned pencil portraits.  Chances are, if you have a picture, I can replicate it.  I am fortunate to have placed these in personal collections all over the United States.  I have recently combined my painting efforts with pencil as well.  The combination of pencil wash and acrylic is beautiful, unique and is definitely eye catching.  Very much an "in your face" type of work.

Acrylic is my painting medium of choice.  I want to work in whatever medium I choose regardless of style.  I believe, as an artist, I never stop learning.  I vary in surface as well,  though most of my acrylic work is done on canvas.  Again, I have been fortunate to work mostly on a commission basis with my paintings.  I have sold paintings in personal collections and for businesses all over the world.  Large-scale acrylic murals are another of my passions in surface.  I have designed and created over 40 murals and enjoy this work very much.  As daunting as it seems, the end result and accomplishment are unlike any of the other pieces in acrylic.

For the last 23 years I have been teaching the art of painting.  First starting as a volunteer, I went on to create a foundation called Art For Kids.  With art being taken out of the schools I felt that it was important to let kids create and learn about art.  It wasn't long until I was offering private classes that focused on finding the students style and taking them from conception to finished product.  I want those that I teach to be able to paint on their own with confidence.  Special needs classes are a passion for me and I imagine that I will continue to do that for as long as I can.  Though I teach all ages, all children  are artists and able to create without limitation.  I am fortunate that most of these children respond to me and seem to learn very quickly.  Nothing gives me more pleasure than to watch a student grow and become an artist in their own right.  I have many students that sell and have achieved great success in their work.
